Not a generic test prep — CBAT questions and formats you will see on the real assessment.

What is the CBAT?

The Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) is a multi-part cognitive assessment used by the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, and other armed forces worldwide, to evaluate how candidates think, process information, and perform under pressure. It is designed to measure a range of mental abilities relevant to operational and aviation environments, including numerical reasoning, prioritisation, multi-tasking, information updating, and situational awareness.

CBAT is not a knowledge test. It assesses how you respond to unfamiliar problems in real time, often while managing competing demands and time constraints.

Why the CBAT Matters

CBAT performance plays a significant role in determining eligibility for specific RAF roles. The test is designed to differentiate between candidates based on cognitive capability rather than background knowledge or prior training.

Strong CBAT results can expand the range of roles you are eligible for, while weaker performance may limit progression regardless of motivation or academic achievement. For this reason, understanding how the assessment works and preparing appropriately is critical.

What You'll Be Tested On

CBAT is made up of several distinct tests, each designed to assess a different aspect of cognitive performance. These include numerical reasoning, prioritisation and decision-making, auditory processing, short-term memory, and the ability to manage and update information while performing multiple tasks.

Some elements involve rapid mental calculations, while others focus on monitoring systems, responding to changing information, or following instructions under pressure. Each test contributes to an overall cognitive profile used during selection.

Can You Practise for the CBAT?

While some CBAT tests are designed to assess natural cognitive processing and cannot be reproduced exactly, many of the core skills they rely on can be developed. These include operating under time pressure, managing and updating information, prioritising competing tasks, and responding effectively to unfamiliar problem formats.

CBAT Ready supports this by using CBAT-style exercises that reflect the structure and demands of the assessment, helping candidates build speed, accuracy, and confidence without attempting to copy the real tests themselves. The focus is on skill development and familiarity, not memorisation or imitation.

CBAT Practice Questions & Preparation

CBAT preparation is most effective when it focuses on realistic, time-pressured exercises that mirror the demands of the assessment. CBAT-style practice questions help you become familiar with the pace, structure, and cognitive load you will face on the day.

Preparation tools typically include:

  • Timed numerical reasoning exercises

  • Prioritisation and decision-making tasks

  • Multi-tasking and information-updating challenges

  • Performance tracking to highlight strengths and weaknesses

These exercises are designed to build competence with the skills CBAT measures, rather than attempting to copy the tests themselves.

CBAT Test Walkthroughs

Each CBAT test has its own structure, interface, and demands. To help you understand what to expect, I've provided detailed walkthroughs explaining how each assessment works, what you will see on screen, and what candidates are required to do.

Use the links below to explore each test in more detail:

1. Airborne Numerical Test (ANT)

A rapid-fire mental maths assessment involving speed–distance-time, estimation, and applied reasoning.

2. Angles, Bearings and Degrees Test (ABD)

Judges your ability to interpret angles, compare headings, and understand directional changes.

3. Auditory Capacity Test

A multi-tasking audio stream test where you must recall, track, and respond to auditory information while performing other tasks.

4. Cognitive Updating Test

Measures your ability to track changing information and update variables in real time under pressure.

5. FLAG Test

A divided-attention task requiring simultaneous processing of colours, alphanumeric sequences, and instructions.

6. Digit Recognition Test

Short term memory testing through memorisation of increasingly larger digits.

7. Directions and Distances

Measures your ability to spatially comprehend directions between various points.

8. Dynamic Projection Test

Further spatial testing which further integrates your motor skills to test your ability to work in a live environment.

9. Instrument Comprehension Test

Measures your ability to interpret standard flight instruments, altimeters, AI, turn/bank indicators, and rate of climb.

10. Numerical Operations Test

High-speed mental arithmetic covering addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with strict time limits.

11. Rapid Tracking Test

A joystick-based coordination test evaluating fine motor control, tracking accuracy, and reaction timing.

12. Sensory Motor Apparatus Test

A joystick and foot pedal based test which evaluates your hand-foot coordination.

13. Situational Awareness Test

Measures your ability to maintain a mental picture of dynamic information while completing parallel tasks.

14. Spatial Integration Test

Combines multiple 2D and 3D shapes, requiring mental rotation and integration of spatial elements.

15. System Logic Test

Numerical and verbal reasoning which tests your ability to analyse large quantities of information

16. Table Reading Test

Visual search and information processing evaluation using table and reference key to scan for information.

17. Target Recognition Test

Identifying correct targets from rapid image flashes or symbol sets under time stress.

18. Trace Test

A visual tracking test requiring spatial comprehension to comprehend directions, alongside memorising of various targets.

19. Verbal Logic Test

Another verbal reasoning test which tests your ability to analyse and collect information from various pages.

20. Vigilance Test

A visual comprehension and multitasking test which requires an understanding of prioritisation.

21. Visual Search

A high-speed scanning test requiring rapid identification of targets within cluttered displays.

Why CBAT Ready Works

CBAT Ready is designed to help candidates prepare for the cognitive demands of CBAT by training the skills the assessment relies on, rather than attempting to reproduce the tests themselves. It focuses on working accurately under time pressure, managing competing tasks, and making effective decisions with incomplete or changing information.

The app uses CBAT-style exercises, timed conditions, and performance tracking to build familiarity with these demands and help candidates approach test day with greater confidence and control.

What Candidates Say

Candidates use CBAT Ready to gain a clearer understanding of CBAT demands and to practise the skills that commonly challenge first-time test takers. Feedback often highlights improved confidence, better time management, and reduced anxiety on the day of assessment.

"Recently, I took a military aptitude test very similar to CBAT one used by the Canadian and British military and over 80% of the test takers failed. Interestingly, the only people who passed were those who had iOS devices and had access to your app. Most others, including myself, use Android devices (in my case, a new Samsung), and were unaware of the app since it doesn’t show up in the Play Store. This clearly created an unfair disadvantage, even though we were all equally capable." - Capt Sigan

"Whether it's your first time, or third doing CBAT, I think this is a MUST download for helping getting your head into the tests. The developer has done a great job."- EJ

"Used this a lot prior to my CBAT in Aug. the app has a lot of stuff I was weak with initially, but helped a lot and got me a competitive score! Absolutely god send." - Mohemr

CBAT Ready is now available on iOS and Android so candidates worldwide can prepare equally.

Get Ready the Right Way

CBAT cannot be crammed for, and it does not reward memorisation. The most effective preparation is understanding how the tests work and developing comfort with time pressure and unfamiliar tasks.

CBAT Ready supports this by combining walkthrough knowledge with structured CBAT-style practice, helping you arrive on test day focused and prepared rather than uncertain.
