CBAT Digit Recognition Test: What to Expect & How It Works

The CBAT Digit Recognition Test is a short-term visual memory assessment used in RAF CBAT to evaluate how well candidates can remember and recall strings of digits presented briefly on screen and accurately answer questions about them.

This page is a walkthrough explaining the structure and demands of the test. It does not contain traditional practice tests.

Overview of the Test Format

This test runs for approximately four minutes, including instructions. During the test you will be:

  • Shown a string of digits briefly on screen

  • Asked multiple-choice questions about the digits you saw, such as how many times a certain digit appeared in the sequence

The purpose of the Digit Recognition Test is to assess your short-term visual memory capacity under time constraints.

What to Expect During the ACT

You will be asked to:

  • Observe a sequence of digits displayed for a short period

  • Memorise the order and frequency of those digits

  • Answer questions about the string from memory once it disappears

As the test progresses the string of numbers will grow. Eventually you will be shown a large string of numbers such as 218911827. The number string will then be hidden and you will be asked "How many ones were present?"

Test Timing and Flow

The Digit Recognition Test runs on a tight schedule. Each digit sequence appears only briefly, and questions follow quickly. Because the test is short and focused solely on visual memory, performance depends on how well you can hold and retrieve visual information under time pressure.

Common Candidate Notes

  • The sequences start short and can increase in length as the test progresses.

  • Focus on patterns, repetition, and grouping digits strategically to aid recall.

  • Don’t rush — accuracy matters more than speed on this brief test.

Summary

The CBAT Digit Recognition Test is a short-term visual memory assessment that measures your ability to remember and recall digit sequences presented briefly on screen. Its design and timing make this test different from multi-task or reasoning components of CBAT. This walkthrough exists to clarify what happens during the Digit Recognition Test and what you can expect on the day.
