Where the PFQ fits

The PFQ is the first rung of APM's ladder — the entry point before the PMQ.

Step 1You are here
PFQ
Project Fundamentals Qualification

The entry-level award: a one-hour, 60-question multiple-choice exam on the core terms and concepts. No experience needed, and a natural first step before the PMQ.

Step 2
PMQ
Project Management Qualification

The knowledge-based benchmark most employers ask for: a 2.5-hour, scenario-based exam across the whole Body of Knowledge. The qualification this section prepares you for.

Step 3
PPQ
Practitioner Qualification

A competence-based assessment for those already applying project management in a real role — the step beyond the PMQ.

Step 4
ChPP
Chartered Project Professional

APM's highest standard: chartered status, assessed against experience and professional practice rather than by an exam.

APM PFQ FAQ

APM PFQ questions, answered

The APM Project Fundamentals Qualification (PFQ) is the entry-level project management qualification from the Association for Project Management, based on the APM Body of Knowledge. It confirms a solid grasp of core project management terms and concepts and needs no prior experience.

It is a one-hour exam of 60 multiple-choice questions. Each question has one best answer, and there is no negative marking. It is sat online with a remote invigilator or at an accredited provider's centre.

60% — you need to answer at least 36 of the 60 questions correctly. Unlike the PMQ, the PFQ pass mark is fixed and published, and you get a provisional result as soon as you finish.

No. The PFQ is designed as a first qualification and assumes no prior project management experience or study. It is a natural starting point before the PMQ.

The PFQ is the introductory award — a one-hour, 60-question multiple-choice exam of core concepts. The PMQ is the deeper, knowledge-based benchmark most employers ask for, with written answers. You do not need the PFQ to sit the PMQ, but many people take it first to build confidence.

Much less than the PMQ — many candidates prepare in a matter of days, often around 20 to 30 hours, or a short accredited course. Practising multiple-choice questions to exam pace is the most effective preparation.

Yes — the whole exam is 60 multiple-choice questions, each with a single best answer. That makes it well suited to practising with question banks like this one.

No. Once you pass, the PFQ does not expire and does not need renewing.
